Our Story

Turning Tragedy into Triumph

Our founder, Tami Loehrs, was a world wide digital forensics expert for over 20 years living in the United States when her husband and soulmate died of a brain tumor. It was her travels through Africa that ultimately saved her life after this debilitating tragedy. Rwanda was the first place she landed and the one place she felt like home. She has been enamored with the country, the people and especially the gorillas ever since.

It was the gorillas that really came to her. Literally. She was charged by three silverbacks (not at the same time) but stood respectfully... and shakily... until she was welcomed into the family as mother gorillas came out of the trees to nurse and groom their babies next to her. She fell in love immediately and could not stay away. During her thirteen gorilla treks to date, the gorillas have touched her and made her feel welcome every time.

So she picked up her life, moved continents away from her friends and family and started Silverbacks Cafe and Silverbacks Coffee to promote Rwanda and its rich culture, spread kindness, give back to the community and assist in the preservation of these magnificent and endangered beauties that are so important to our planet.

As such, we are committed to helping with the conservation and protection of the mountain gorillas and that is why a portion of all proceeds are going directly to them. We welcome anyone who has not had the life changing experience of visiting these impressive beings to come and see for yourself.

Africa... Table for One

Read the story that started it all

After losing her husband to brain cancer, our founder set off on a healing journey through Africa with her new unwanted title of "widow", a table of one. During her month of travel, she not only fell in love with the mountain gorillas, she felt like Rwanda was home. So she said goodbye to the United States and moved her life to Rwanda to start the Silverbacks franchise. During her travels, she documented her story with both her pen and her camera to create a coffee table book of incredible photography with an inspiring story.
